Edo Government Intensifies Crackdown on Cultism, Seals Shrines, Declares Cult Leaders Wanted

The Edo State Government has intensified its crackdown on cultism and violent gangs, sealing properties linked to suspected cult leaders. This follows the discovery of a shrine in Egbaen community and a deadly clash between rival groups in Evboyare, which left one person dead.

Officials said the operation, codenamed ‘Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers’, uncovered a white casket and fetish items believed to have been used for initiation rites. The property was immediately sealed as part of efforts to dismantle what authorities described as the “physical and spiritual infrastructure” of cultism in the state.

In Evboyare, security forces moved against the residence of alleged cult leader Felix Aigbedion, declared wanted over a violent confrontation between the Eiye and Maphite confraternities. The clash left a man identified as Festus dead, with homes and vehicles destroyed. Locally made firearms were also recovered during the raid.

The coordinator of the operation, Idemudia Noah, warned cultists to renounce their membership or face the full weight of the law. He said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration was determined to purge Edo State of cult-related violence and restore safety to communities.
