The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency has begun a comprehensive audit of the nation’s airspace, the first in its 25-year history. The review, which started this week, is examining safety performance, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across the Kano flight information region.
Officials say the exercise is aimed at preparing Nigeria for international aviation inspections, including the Civil Aviation Authority’s certification process and upcoming safety oversight audits by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The audit will cover Nigeria’s four major international airports — Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt — as well as Enugu, Maiduguri, and several state and private aerodromes. Air traffic services, communication, navigation, surveillance, and rescue operations are also being assessed.
NAMA’s Managing Director, Farouk Umar, described the initiative as a landmark step to improve transparency and strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in African aviation. He urged full support from industry stakeholders, stressing that the safety of Nigeria’s skies is “non-negotiable.”
