The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has restated his role as custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, pledging to safeguard the heritage, safety and welfare of his people.
His remarks follow recent tensions with the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, over the authority to confer the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on businessman Dotun Sanusi. In a statement by his media office, the Alaafin stressed that his authority is rooted in centuries of Yoruba history and spiritual legacy.

He rejected suggestions of a supremacy battle, describing such disputes as distractions from the unity and progress of Yorubaland.
Oba Owoade underlined his leadership as one of steady progress and practical governance, guided by respect for tradition. He vowed to continue defending and promoting Yoruba values to ensure the culture thrives for future generations.
