The Independent National Electoral Commission says more than 1.3 million Nigerians have completed online pre-registration for voter cards in the first week of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise. The process began on August 18 and will run until August 30 next year.
INEC said 1,379,342 applications were received by August 24, with women accounting for 52 percent of registrants and young people aged 18 to 34 making up over 62 percent. More than 374,000 students have so far registered, along with more than 27,000 persons with disabilities.

Physical registration also commenced on Monday at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide. The option allows citizens to register in person or complete applications started online. INEC reminded Nigerians that only citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered are eligible.
The Commission warned against double or multiple registrations, but confirmed that voters can transfer their registration between states or within the FCT and apply for replacement of lost or damaged cards. It urged citizens not to wait until the last days of the year-long exercise, stressing that last-minute pressure often overwhelms registration centres.
