At Least 30 People Dead as Landslide Hits Kashmir Shrine Route

At least 30 people have been killed and many more injured after heavy rains triggered a landslide in Indian-administered Kashmir. The disaster struck on Tuesday near the Vaishno Devi shrine, a popular Hindu pilgrimage route in Katra.

Rescue teams, including police and emergency workers, were still searching for survivors on Wednesday. The pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi Temple has been suspended while operations continue.

The landslide is part of widespread devastation caused by monsoon rains in the Himalayan region, which have left more than 1,200 people dead in India and at least 800 in Pakistan since June. Authorities say bridges, roads and homes have been destroyed, while India has opened dam gates, warning Pakistan of possible flooding.

Telecommunications have been severely disrupted, with officials working to restore services as further rainfall is forecast.
