The United Nations has described the confirmation of famine in parts of Gaza as a devastating first for the Middle East. Guyana’s deputy representative, Trishala Persaud, speaking on behalf of several member states, said millions face extreme food insecurity, with children and the elderly most at risk.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative, IPC, report warns famine is likely to spread to Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis by September, while across Gaza nearly 1.5 million people are already in crisis. More than 130,000 children are projected to suffer acute malnutrition over the next year, with older persons and those with chronic illnesses also among the most vulnerable.
