A powerful earthquake has struck eastern Afghanistan, killing more than six hundred people and injuring hundreds more. The shallow quake hit near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province just before midnight, with multiple aftershocks continuing through the night.
According to Taliban interior ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani, 610 people were killed in Kunar province alone, with 12 additional fatalities in neighbouring Nangarhar. The United Nations has confirmed its teams are on the ground delivering emergency assistance and lifesaving support to affected areas.

The earthquake destroyed numerous homes in the impoverished region, which remains vulnerable to natural disasters. Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
This represents the deadliest earthquake to hit Afghanistan since June 2022, when a magnitude 5.9 quake killed more than one thousand people in Paktika province. Rescue efforts are continuing as teams work to reach remote affected areas.
