NSIB Begins Inquiry into Abuja Train Derailment, Confirms 12 Injuries

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has confirmed that 12 people were injured when a train derailed in Abuja last week. The train was carrying 583 passengers when it went off the tracks along the Kaduna corridor shortly after leaving the capital.

The bureau’s Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, said an Investigator-in-Charge has been appointed to lead the probe in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other stakeholders. He added that evidence-protection measures have been taken, including securing CCTV footage and critical data.

Captain Badeh also appealed to the government to address funding gaps that could hamper thorough investigations. He assured that a final report on the derailment will be released within 30 days and shared with the public and relevant authorities.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has suspended services on the Abuja-Kaduna route until further notice. It has also initiated refunds for passengers and dismissed claims that the trains were not in good condition.
