Nigerian Sprinter Favour Ofili Switches Allegiance to Turkey

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has confirmed she is switching her sporting allegiance to Turkey. The 22-year-old, who competes in the 100, 150 and 200 metres, announced the move in a post on her X account.

Ofili said she took the decision after repeated administrative failings by Nigeria’s athletics authorities. She missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after officials failed to update her on drug-testing requirements and was also left out of the 100 metres at Paris 2024 due to a registration error.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist stressed her switch was not financially motivated. She described it as a “big decision” taken after years of neglect, while expressing pride in her achievements for Nigeria, including six gold medals at championship level.

Ofili now follows in the footsteps of Gloria Alozie and Francis Obikwelu, who left Nigeria in the early 2000s to compete for Spain and Portugal respectively. She will sit out this year’s championships as part of the nationality switch process.
