The Federal Government has declared Friday, 5 September, as a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The announcement was made in a statement by the Ministry of Interior.
Permanent Secretary Dr Magdalene Ajani, speaking on behalf of Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion. She urged them to emulate the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

The government also encouraged Nigerians of all faiths to use the day to pray for peace, security, and stability in the country, while supporting efforts to strengthen national unity and development.
Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, is traditionally marked with prayers, lectures, processions, and acts of charity.
