The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has dismissed attempts to associate its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, with the activities of Simon Ekpa, insisting that its campaign for self-determination remains peaceful. The group said Mr. Kanu’s prolonged detention has created a vacuum that opportunists have taken advantage of.
In a statement, IPOB’s spokesperson, Mr. Emma Powerful, commended political figures who have drawn distinctions between Mr. Kanu’s movement and violent actions in the region. The group stressed that its operations are rooted in non-violence and enjoy recognition beyond Nigeria’s borders.

The proscribed IPOB urged the international community, human rights bodies, and democratic governments to take note of its position. It called for Mr. Kanu’s unconditional release, arguing that resolving his case would ease tensions in the South East.
The group also appealed for independent investigations into violence and cautioned against unfounded attributions to its members.
