Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour faults Lagos leaders over poor infrastructure

Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, says the state does not belong to President Bola Tinubu or his political structure. Speaking on a monitored interview, he argued that Lagos is the collective responsibility of its residents, not one individual.

Mr Rhodes-Vivour criticised successive administrations in Lagos, saying they have failed to deliver quality governance while relying on violence and intimidation to maintain control. He said local government officials were more focused on suppressing opposition than improving basic infrastructure.

He cited Alimosho Local Government as an example, alleging that officials deployed security personnel to stop an opposition gathering rather than fix deteriorating inner roads. He added that if good governance had been delivered, there would be no need for intimidation.

Rhodes-Vivour said the continued reliance on violence showed the weakness of the ruling political structure. According to him, “violence is the last refuge of incompetence” and a sign that the state’s leadership has not improved people’s lives enough to win support on merit.
