PENGASSAN backs NUPENG strike threat, vows to halt refinery operations

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, has warned it may shut down refinery operations if the dispute between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, and Dangote Refinery remains unresolved. NUPENG had earlier threatened to stop work from Monday, saying its members would begin seeking alternative jobs.

In a statement, PENGASSAN’s General Secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, said the measure would be a last resort to protect the rights and interests of workers. The union called on stakeholders to begin immediate dialogue to resolve the matter.

PENGASSAN accused Dangote Refinery management of resisting efforts to unionise its workers since inception. The association pledged support for NUPENG’s demand for full unionisation of tanker drivers and other refinery employees in line with International Labour Organisation principles and Nigerian labour laws.

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, PETROAN, has also announced a three-day suspension of fuel lifting and sales from 9 September in solidarity with NUPENG.
