Veteran Nigerian musician Bright Chimezie has voiced concern over the quality of lyrics in today’s music, stressing that while modern artists excel in rhythm and production, their songs often lack enduring substance.
Speaking on a podcast, Mr. Chimezie said that during his prime, he and his contemporaries created music that carried strong messages and has stood the test of time. He cited his 1984 classic ‘Respect Africa’ as an example of work that still gives him pride decades later.

He encouraged younger musicians to consider the long-term impact of their words, asking whether they would still be proud of their lyrics after 40 years. While commending their creativity and success, he urged them to blend artistry with meaningful messages that uplift society.
