Twelve people, including four children, have died after a gas tanker collided with a commuter bus on the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway in Imo State. Police say the crash happened on Tuesday night when the tanker, marked with the inscription NUPENG, was driving against traffic.
According to police spokesperson Henry Okoye, eight others sustained injuries in the accident. The victims were members of the Jehovah’s Witness Church travelling from Anambra State to Agwa village in Imo. The bodies have been deposited at Ogbaku Mortuary, while the injured are receiving treatment at Divine Hospital, Awo-Omamma.

Mr Okoye confirmed that police officers, working with road safety officials, cleared the wreckage and restored traffic flow. He added that an investigation into the crash has begun.
Imo State Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma expressed condolences to the families of the victims and cautioned motorists against reckless driving practices such as travelling against traffic and speeding, which remain leading causes of road accidents.
