National Grid Collapse Plunges Nigeria into Blackout

The national grid collapsed on Wednesday morning, leading to widespread power outages across Nigeria. Data from the Independent System Operator showed generation dropped sharply from 2,917 megawatts to just 1.5 megawatts between 11 and 12 o’clock.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the collapse, saying supply was lost at 11:23 am and that efforts were underway with stakeholders to restore stability. Other distribution companies also reported blackouts across their service areas.

Nigeria’s power grid has a history of repeated failures, with at least 11 collapses recorded in 2024. In February this year, parts of the country were without electricity after another system failure, though the Transmission Company of Nigeria denied reports that the grid collapsed twice that same day.

In July, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced there was no grid collapse in the first quarter of 2025, but pledged to push the system operator to strengthen coordination and prevent future failures.
