At least 10 children have died in Niger State following a fresh outbreak of diphtheria in Agaie and Bida local government areas. The victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida but succumbed despite medical efforts.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that more deaths have been recorded in rural communities, though the figures remain unclear.

The outbreak has raised alarm among residents, with calls for urgent government action to halt further spread. Community members have appealed for immediate supplies of vaccines and drugs to protect children in the affected areas.
Health officials confirmed the outbreak and said emergency response measures have been activated. The Ministry of Health urged parents to complete routine immunisations for their children and called on the public to promptly report suspected cases. Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection, can be fatal if untreated.
