Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Approves Expansion of Controversial West Bank Settlements

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the disputed E1 plan to expand settlements on occupied West Bank land around East Jerusalem, declaring that a Palestinian state will not be permitted. The move would add thousands of housing units to the Maale Adumim settlement, with plans to double its population.

The project is designed to isolate East Jerusalem from surrounding Palestinian areas and cut territorial links between the northern and southern West Bank. Critics say this undermines any prospect of a future Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Human rights organisations warn the expansion will uproot Palestinian communities, including Bedouins, and intensify tensions. The plan, involving about 3,500 new apartments, comes amid rising settler attacks on Palestinians and growing international concern over Israel’s settlement drive. The United Nations considers the settlements illegal under international law.
