The UN Security Council will, on Friday 19 September, vote on whether to reimpose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, after Britain, France and Germany triggered a process accusing Tehran of breaching the 2015 nuclear deal. The three European powers, original signatories to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allege that Iran has vastly exceeded uranium enrichment limits and broken other commitments.
Diplomats say the resolution is unlikely to secure nine votes to maintain the current suspension of sanctions, meaning punitive measures could be restored. The meeting is scheduled for 10am New York time.

The 2015 deal has faltered since the United States abandoned it in 2018 under Donald Trump. Since then, Iran has expanded its nuclear activities, halted cooperation with UN inspectors, and seen talks with Washington collapse amid heightened regional tensions, including conflict with Israel.
