Over 700 Women Mobilise for Reserved Seats Bill

More than 750 women from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected in Abuja on Monday to press for the passage of the Special Seats Reserved for Women Bill. The women will gather at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development before staging a peaceful walk to the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

Leaders of the National Assembly are due to receive their memorandum during a scheduled stakeholder session. Organisers say the mobilisation represents a unified call for stronger female representation in governance.

The proposed Bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to reserve seats for women in both federal and state legislatures. Supporters argue it would not only boost numbers but also ensure women’s voices are heard in key decision-making spaces.

Advocates say the measure would strengthen inclusive governance across the country, while highlighting Nigeria’s low ranking on global indices for female political participation.
