Car dealers from Southwest Nigeria staged a protest in Akure on Monday, accusing Customs officers of extortion, harassment, and illegal charges. Under the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria, AMDON, they marched to the Nigeria Customs Service office in Alagbaka, demanding President Bola Tinubu’s intervention.
The dealers claimed that vehicles cleared with official duties in Lagos were repeatedly intercepted on highways, with fresh demands for inflated payments. They alleged that Customs officers imposed illegal fees of up to one million naira and frequently impounded cars already released from Apapa Port.

AMDON leaders said the practices were crippling their businesses and urged urgent action to halt the abuse. Responding, Customs Comptroller Queen Obazee pledged to look into the grievances, ordered the release of seized vehicles, but stressed that officers would continue enforcing compliance with regulations.
