Senator Natasha Akpoti Returns to National Assembly After Six-Month Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has resumed duties at the National Assembly, six months after her suspension by the Senate. She arrived at the complex on Tuesday accompanied by supporters, just hours after her office at suite 2.05 in the Senate wing was unlocked by the sergeant-at-arms.

Speaking to journalists, the senator representing Kogi Central said she had not received any formal communication about her reinstatement. She explained that the last correspondence from the clerk stated that she could not resume without Senate approval, but decided to return after learning that her office had been opened.

Her arrival led to brief tension at the entrance of the Senate wing as her supporters insisted on following her inside. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan urged them to remain calm, noting that their voices had already been heard and promising to spend only a few minutes in her office.

She was suspended earlier this year for alleged breaches of Senate rules. In July, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled the suspension “excessive and unconstitutional” but the National Assembly management had insisted she required a fresh Senate resolution or a definitive court order to resume. Tuesday marked her first time accessing her office since the suspension.
