The Federal Government has rejected suggestions that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians, describing the allegations as misleading and divisive.
According to Information Minister Mohammed Idris, such claims oversimplify a complex security situation and risk deepening religious and ethnic divisions.

He stressed that extremist groups have targeted Nigerians of all faiths, including Muslims and those without religious affiliation. He stressed that the government’s counter-terrorism efforts have led to the deaths of more than 13,500 insurgents, the rescue of nearly 10,000 hostages, and over 700 convictions of Boko Haram suspects since May 2023.
Mr Idris also highlighted the recent capture of Ansaru’s leadership, an al-Qaeda affiliate, as evidence of sustained progress. He insisted Nigeria remains committed to defeating terrorism while fostering unity across its diverse religious and ethnic communities.
