The Federal Government has deployed federal mines officers to lead rescue efforts after a mine pit collapsed in Kadauri village, Maru, Zamfara State. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development said the incident was caused by heavy rainfall and worsened by illegal mining activities.
According to the ministry, at least 15 itinerant mine workers were trapped. Thirteen bodies have so far been recovered, while efforts are continuing to rescue two others still trapped under the rubble.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, described the incident as both avoidable and tragic. He confirmed that first responders had been mobilised to work with Zamfara State authorities and said the site would be sealed off after the rescue operation.
The ministry added that the area contained loose sand and traces of gold, which attracted illegal miners despite safety risks. It also noted that the Federal Government has intensified efforts to combat unlawful mining in Zamfara through security operations and the deployment of mining marshals.
