Authorities say at least 36 people have died after a boat capsized in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State. The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, confirmed that 40 passengers were rescued, while search efforts are still ongoing.
The vessel, carrying about 80 people, overturned near Akpu and Odumomo settlements as it travelled from riverine communities in Ibaji to Ilushi in Edo State. Most of the victims were women, children, and mourners returning from a burial ceremony. Survivors were largely from Onugwa and surrounding communities.

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has expressed shock at the tragedy and directed agencies to intensify rescue operations. He also urged river travellers to adopt basic safety measures, while offering condolences to the bereaved families. Rescue teams continue their efforts as the full scale of the disaster unfolds.
