The Imo State Government has imposed an immediate and total ban on all mining and dredging activities within the Owerri Capital Territory, citing severe environmental damage from years of unregulated operations.
Commissioner for Industry, Mines and Solid Minerals, Ernest Ibejiako, said the decision followed widespread flooding, erosion, and damage to roads and public infrastructure. He noted that previous bans had been ignored, leading to worsening degradation and threats to communities and farmlands.

The state government has formally notified federal authorities and requested the revocation of all existing licences in the area. Mr Ibejiako commended the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals for dispatching senior officials to assess the situation, adding that the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma acted under the Land Use Act to protect Owerri’s environment and public safety.
