The National Council of State has approved President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, from Kogi State, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure.
A statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Professor Amupitan, a 58-year-old academic and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, is the first nominee from the North-Central region to head the commission. The President described him as apolitical and committed to integrity.

Council members unanimously endorsed his nomination, while Kogi Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo praised his character and experience. In line with constitutional procedure, President Tinubu will forward Professor Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation. He currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
