The National Assembly is proposing that the 2027 presidential and governorship elections be held in November 2026, shifting the traditional February or March timetable. The plan is contained in a draft amendment to the 2022 Electoral Act, which mandates that such polls be conducted at least 185 days before the end of incumbents’ tenure on May 29.
The proposal was discussed during a public hearing by the Joint Committee on electoral matters, where stakeholders also pressed for electronic voting and transmission of results to enhance transparency.

Lawmakers say the adjustment will allow sufficient time to resolve election petitions before new leaders are sworn in. The committee also recommended aligning constitutional provisions to transfer the power of fixing election dates from the constitution to the Electoral Act for flexibility and efficiency.
