Cameroon’s opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has declared himself winner of Sunday’s presidential election, despite official results yet to be released. In a video posted online, he urged 92-year-old President Paul Biya to concede defeat, saying the people’s will must be respected.
Tchiroma, once a close ally of Biya and former government spokesman, resigned in June to run against the veteran leader. His campaign drew strong backing from opposition coalitions and civic groups, positioning him as Biya’s main challenger.

The government has warned that only the Constitutional Council can announce official results. Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji cautioned that any premature declaration would amount to treason. The council has until October 26 to certify the final outcome, according to Cameroonian electoral law.
