Senate to Screen Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

The Senate is set to screen Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday 15 October.

The Director of Information at the National Assembly, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the session will take place at the Senate Chamber in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate requesting Amupitan’s confirmation in line with constitutional provisions. The letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, urged lawmakers to treat the nomination with urgency.

If confirmed, Amupitan will succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, marking a significant leadership change at the nation’s electoral body.
