Peter Obi Faults Defections, Says Democracy Is About Persuasion

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi has criticised the wave of defections by political leaders to the ruling All Progressives Congress, describing it as unhealthy for democracy.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Mr Obi said Nigeria was not under military rule and that citizens cannot be “captured” politically. He emphasised that true leadership depends on persuasion, performance, and good governance, not coercion.

Reacting to the defections of Enugu and Bayelsa governors, Peter Mbah and Douye Diri, he said leaders are free to make political choices but warned that realignment without tangible results cannot earn public trust.

He urged government officials to focus on policies that directly improve citizens’ welfare, saying performance remains the foundation of loyalty in a democracy.
