Nigerian Army Launches Inquiry After Soldier Allegedly Kills Driver at Checkpoint

The Nigerian Army says it has begun an investigation into the death of a commercial bus driver following an altercation with a soldier at a military checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North-East area of Ondo State. The driver died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, days after the incident.

A statement by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 32 Artillery Brigade, Njoka Irabor, said the driver’s vehicle had developed a fault near the checkpoint while heading to Abuja from Akure. During the delay, passengers reportedly demanded a refund of their fares, prompting one of them to seek help from a soldier.

The statement said the soldier acted in an unprofessional manner that led to a physical confrontation with the driver. The army later evacuated the victim for treatment and covered his medical expenses, but he died despite being transferred to two hospitals for further care.

The brigade has since paid condolence visits to the family of the deceased and the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ondo State. The army says the soldier involved will face disciplinary action, and the outcome of the investigation will be made public.
