ECOWAS Appoints Osinbajo to Lead Election Observation Mission in Côte d’Ivoire

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Nigeria’s former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to lead its election observation mission to Côte d’Ivoire. The presidential election in the West African country is scheduled for October 25.

In a statement on Sunday, ECOWAS said the mission, which will operate from October 19 to 29, aligns with its protocol on democracy and good governance. Professor Osinbajo will head a team of eminent West Africans to engage national stakeholders and promote a peaceful and credible election.

The regional body said the delegation will collaborate with other international and local observers to assess the conduct of the polls and build public confidence in the process. It added that the deployment reflects ECOWAS’s commitment to peace, stability, and credible elections across the region.

The vote in Côte d’Ivoire comes amid rising political tension, as President Alassane Ouattara seeks a controversial fourth term despite earlier promises to step down. His decision has sparked debate over term limits and democratic transition in the country.
