NLC Threatens Nationwide Shutdown Over Unresolved ASUU Demands

The Nigeria Labour Congress has given the Federal Government four weeks to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities or face a nationwide shutdown. NLC President Joe Ajaero issued the ultimatum in Abuja after meeting with leaders of tertiary education unions, insisting the government must honour the 2009 agreement with ASUU and resolve all outstanding issues.

Ajaero warned that failure to act would trigger an indefinite solidarity strike by labour unions across the country. He said the government’s sincerity would determine whether normalcy returns to the sector or the nation grinds to a halt.

The warning follows ASUU’s two-week strike declared on Sunday over welfare, infrastructure, and unpaid salaries. The government has since ordered universities to enforce a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy and conduct staff roll calls.
