Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on the federal government to reinstate mathematics as a compulsory admission requirement for all tertiary courses, including the arts. His comments follow the government’s new policy removing mathematics as a mandatory subject for non-science students seeking university admission.
In a post on X, Obi described the policy as a “costly mistake,” arguing that while mathematics remains compulsory in secondary school, excluding it from university entry requirements would make students take the subject less seriously.

He said mathematics is essential for critical thinking, logic, and problem-solving, adding that removing it would leave many students ill-prepared for the demands of modern life in a data-driven world.
Obi questioned the rationale behind the policy and urged the government to prioritise education policies that prepare Nigerian students for the challenges of the 21st century.
