Nigeria’s Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to repeal the Electoral Act 2022 and replace it with a new Electoral Bill 2025 aimed at strengthening the nation’s electoral system. The motion, sponsored by Senator Simon Lalong, was adopted through a voice vote after majority support during Wednesday’s plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The proposed legislation, now before the Committee on Electoral Matters, seeks to address funding delays, disputes over the voter register, weak enforcement of offences, and controversies surrounding electronic result transmission.

Lawmakers say the new bill will enhance INEC’s independence, ensure transparency, and curb electoral violence. The committee is expected to conduct a public hearing and report back within two weeks as debate on reforming Nigeria’s democratic process continues.
