Kanu to represent Self as Legal Team Withdraws

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, says he will defend himself in court following the withdrawal of his legal team. Lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, applied to withdraw from the case, saying the defendant had taken over his own representation.

All Senior Advocates of Nigeria on the defence team also withdrew from the trial, a move Kanu confirmed during Thursday’s proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja. When asked by the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, if he wanted a court-appointed lawyer, Kanu declined the offer.

The IPOB leader told the court that he would be representing himself for now, although that could change later. He further argued orally that the court lacks jurisdiction to try him in the terrorism case filed by the Federal Government.

Kanu, who appeared to open his defence, has listed several high-profile figures as witnesses, including former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former military chiefs Tukur Buratai and Theophilus Danjuma.
