Pharmacy Council Shuts Nearly 500 Drug Outlets in Lagos Over Regulatory Violations

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria has sealed 498 medicine premises across Lagos State for breaching pharmaceutical regulations, including illegal operations, unauthorised sale of controlled drugs, and expired licences. The week-long enforcement covered 20 local government areas, with 845 premises inspected — comprising 483 pharmacies, 162 patent medicine stores, and 200 unregistered shops.

Head of Enforcement, Dr Suleiman Chiroma, said the exercise sought to sanitise the drug distribution chain and ensure compliance with the Pharmacy Council Act and National Drug Distribution Guidelines. He said 29 other outlets received compliance directives.

Common offences included unsafe storage of poisonous drugs, unregistered outlets, and unlawful handling of controlled substances. Chiroma urged residents to buy medicines only from licensed premises, warning that public safety remains the council’s foremost priority.
