Nnamdi Kanu Refuses to Enter Defence, Says No Valid Charge Against Him

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has declined to open his defence in the ongoing terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kanu, who was expected to call witnesses, told the court that after reviewing his case file, he found no valid charge against him.

At the resumed hearing today, Kanu said he would not proceed with his defence because he believes the prosecution had failed to establish any case. The IPOB leader had earlier sought additional time to study the case and requested witness summons ahead of his planned testimony.

Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, directed Kanu to file a written address outlining his reasons for refusing to enter defence and to serve the document on the prosecution. The judge also advised him to consult criminal law experts on the legal implications of his decision.

The court adjourned the case to the 4th, 5th, and 6th of November for the adoption of final written addresses or, if necessary, for the defendant to proceed with his defence.
