Senate To Screen New Military Chiefs Wednesday After Tinubu’s Request

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the appointments of the newly named service chiefs. The request covers the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the request during plenary, noting that the Senate had brought forward the screening of the nominees to Wednesday, October 29. The decision, he said, would enable the military leaders to assume office immediately.

The President urged lawmakers to give expeditious consideration to the confirmation process to ensure continuity and effective coordination of the country’s security architecture. The new appointments take immediate effect as part of government efforts to strengthen the national security framework.

However, the opposition African Democratic Congress has criticised the reshuffle, calling on President Tinubu to explain the real reasons behind the changes, amid reports linking the move to an alleged coup attempt.
