The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has dismissed claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that the government’s seaport modernisation programme is focused only on Lagos.
In a statement on Wednesday, Bolaji Akinola, spokesperson to Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, described Obi’s remarks as misleading, saying the government is implementing a nationwide port upgrade plan.
He said procurement processes have begun for the modernisation of ports in Warri, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Onne, alongside ongoing work at the Apapa and TinCan Island ports. The ministry is also collaborating with state governments and private investors on new deep seaports in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states.

Akinola added that the Onitsha River Port in Anambra, developed by the National Inland Waterways Authority, is part of efforts to decentralise operations. He said the reforms align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to promote economic diversification and regional prosperity through Nigeria’s blue economy.
