The Kano Electricity Distribution Company has announced plans to begin mass prepaid meter installations across its franchise areas under a $500 million World Bank–supported programme. The initiative, known as the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme, is designed to improve power management and end the controversial practice of estimated billing.

In a statement released on Wednesday, KEDCO said 128,000 prepaid meters would be distributed free of charge to customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. The company noted that preparations for the rollout were at an advanced stage, though no start date was specified.

KEDCO’s Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Jimeta, said the metering exercise would prioritise existing unmetered customers across the three states. He added that the project forms part of efforts to enhance transparency and accountability in the power sector.
