At Least 21 People Killed in Western Kenya Landslides After Heavy Rains

At least 21 people have been killed and dozens are missing after landslides triggered by heavy rainfall struck Kenya’s western Rift Valley region. Officials say more than 1,000 homes were destroyed overnight in Chesongoch, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said 25 people with serious injuries have been airlifted to Eldoret for treatment, while military and police helicopters are assisting with rescue operations. He said preparations were underway to deliver food and relief materials to affected communities.

The Kenyan Red Cross shared aerial images showing widespread flooding and massive mudslides across hilly terrain, saying access to some affected areas remains extremely difficult due to blocked roads. Rescue efforts are being coordinated with the government to airlift survivors and recover bodies.

Landslides are common in Chesongoch, which has suffered repeated disasters over the years, including fatal incidents in 2010 and 2012. Authorities have warned residents in high-risk zones to relocate as heavy rains continue across western Kenya.
