US Senator Ted Cruz Backs Trump’s Designation of Nigeria as Country of Particular Concern

US Senator Ted Cruz says he will move to hold Nigerian officials accountable following US President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over alleged religious persecution. In a post on his official X handle, Cruz thanked President Trump for what he called decisive leadership and vowed to publicly identify those he accuses of complicity in the coming weeks.

Senator Cruz says he is sponsoring the ‘Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025’, a bill aimed at protecting Christians and other minorities. The move follows Trump’s statement on Friday describing the killing of Christians in Nigeria as “mass slaughter” and warning of possible military action if the government fails to act.

In his statement, Trump said Christianity faces an existential threat in Nigeria and directed two senior lawmakers, Riley Moore and Tom Cole, to investigate the reported killings. He added that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening.”

The Nigerian government has rejected the allegations, describing them as false and divisive. Information Minister Mohammed Idris said Nigeria’s security challenges are not religious in nature and that extremists target citizens of all faiths.
