Over 60,000 Security Personnel Deployed for Anambra Governorship Election says Police Commissioner

The Commissioner of Police for the Anambra governorship election, Abayomi Shogunle, says over 60,000 security personnel have been deployed across the state ahead of Saturday’s poll. Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed this in a statement in Awka, adding that the deployment includes all agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

Mr Shogunle explained that a central command structure has been set up for real-time intelligence sharing and rapid response to security threats. He said operatives will cover all 5,720 polling units, inter-LGA boundaries, and collation centres, with tactical reserves ready for quick intervention.

The police commissioner said the Inspector-General’s enforcement protocol against electoral offences has been activated, warning against ballot snatching, vote-buying, thuggery, and voter intimidation. He reiterated that only federal security agencies are authorised to provide election protection.

Mr Shogunle also reaffirmed the ban on quasi-security groups such as Agunechemba and barred VIPs from moving with armed escorts near polling or collation centres. He added that only INEC officials, accredited observers, and journalists would be allowed free movement within designated election zones.
