Judge Orders PDP to Suspend Convention Until Lamido Is Allowed to Contest

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a final order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party from holding its 2025 national convention scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention, planned for 15 and 16 November, was intended to elect new national officers.

Delivering judgement in a suit filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the PDP cannot proceed with the convention until it complies with its constitution and guidelines. He held that the party must allow Mr Lamido to purchase a nomination form for the office of National Chairman before any convention can take place.

Justice Lifu further prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission from supervising or monitoring the event while the order stands. He said the PDP is obligated to give eligible members equal opportunities to participate and pursue their aspirations under its rules.

The judge also stated that denying Mr Lamido the chance to obtain a nomination form was contrary to the party’s constitutional provisions, and that the PDP must rectify the process before rescheduling its convention.
