An Argentine judge has been dismissed for causing a mistrial in the negligence case involving the medical team of late football legend Diego Maradona. A special panel of judges, lawyers and provincial legislators on Tuesday removed Julieta Makintach from office and barred the 48-year-old from holding any judicial position in future.
Makintach was part of a three-member panel overseeing the now-annulled trial, which examined the treatment Maradona received in 2020 while recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot. She recused herself after it emerged she had appeared in a documentary series about the case, raising concerns over breaches of judicial ethics.
Maradona died on 25th November 2020 at the age of 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema two weeks after the procedure. The football icon had struggled for decades with cocaine and alcohol addictions and was found dead in his bed by a day nurse.

The trial centres on allegations that his medical team provided grossly negligent care by allowing him to recuperate at home with limited supervision instead of in a medical facility. Prosecutors say the defendants could face between eight and 25 years in prison if convicted of homicide with possible intent.
