Court Hands Boko Haram Commander 20 Year Sentence After Guilty Plea

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Boko Haram commander Hussaini Isma’il, known as Maitangaran, to 20 years in prison after finding him guilty on all four terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. Although the convictions totalled 75 years, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of Isma’il’s arrest.

The ruling followed the defendant’s decision to change his plea to guilty after prosecutors played video footage showing him addressing Boko Haram fighters and directing attacks. His lawyer appealed for leniency, saying he had shown remorse.

Mr. Isma’il was linked to attacks in Kano between 2014 and 2016, including assaults on police facilities and the Central Mosque. The judge also ordered post-sentence rehabilitation before any release.
