Teni Challenges Gender Bias in the Music Industry

Singer Teni has challenged gender bias in the Nigerian music industry, telling audiences at Entertainment Week Africa in Lagos that no established male artist can out-sing female performers. She made the remarks during a panel discussion that brought together leading female musicians to discuss power, pay and visibility in the industry.

The event, which runs from November 18 to 23, features artists including Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Waje and Qing Madi. The panel, titled The Price of Being Her, examined issues such as pay disparities, stereotyping and the pressure placed on women working in music. Participants also noted the underrepresentation and undervaluation of female contributions across the sector.

Tiwa Savage opened the session with a spoken word performance addressing how female artists often face disrespect despite years of work and multiple achievements. She said women frequently encounter sexualisation and are remembered more for controversies than their creative output, although she acknowledged male allies who support female talent.

Teni reinforced the message by urging women to reject the notion of being second-class citizens in music. The speakers said women continue to shape African music and culture but face persistent barriers, adding that the industry must give them full recognition for their role in driving creativity and innovation.
