The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the Sokoto Zone has warned that Nigeria’s public universities may slide into another nationwide crisis unless the Federal Government shows genuine commitment to resolving outstanding disputes.
Speaking in Sokoto, Zonal Coordinator Professor Abubakar Sabo criticised what he described as the government’s inconsistent approach to negotiations, despite ASUU’s suspension of its warning strike last month to allow for renewed dialogue.
He said key concerns—particularly salaries, university autonomy, and worsening conditions in state institutions—remain unaddressed. The union also dismissed recent partial payments of arrears as token gestures, arguing that lecturers’ proposed wage adjustments are far too low to stem the ongoing brain drain.

ASUU urged traditional rulers, civil society groups, students, and labour unions to sustain pressure on government, warning that failure to secure a holistic agreement could trigger fresh industrial action.
